Minnesota Varsity League Introduces New Scholastic Esports Program to MN Middle Schools
MNVL Jr. Registration Open Now for Spring ‘24 Season
[BLOOMINGTON, MN] - December 6th, 2023- Minnesota Varsity League (MNVL), the home for Minnesota high school esports, is thrilled to announce the launch of its pioneering scholastic esports program, MNVL Jr., in middle schools across Minnesota. This groundbreaking initiative is set to expand MNVL's mission to advance the academic experience for students, providing a unique blend of competitive gaming and educational enrichment.
As technology continues to shape how students engage with the world, MNVL recognizes the importance of offering diverse opportunities catering to students' evolving interests. The introduction of MNVL Jr. aligns with MNVL's commitment to preparing students for success in an ever-changing world. By embracing the digital landscape and providing students with opportunities to develop valuable skills through gaming, MNVL Jr. aims to deepen the connection students have within their schools by engaging them in an activity they are passionate about while giving structure to supplement their academic pursuits while equipping its participants with tools beyond the confines of traditional education.
Jake Utities, Director of MNVL, expressed enthusiasm about the program, stating, "We are thrilled to expand our mission by providing this first of its kind academic esports program for Minnesota middle schools. This initiative has always been a goal that has received nothing but support from the community. Not only does it align with the interests of our students, but it also underscores our commitment to fostering 21st-century skills that serve as a foundational stepping stone, creating a clear pathway for students to continue their esports journey into high school and beyond."
The launch of MNVL Jr. comes on the heels of a monumental year. In early 2023, MNVL launched the MNVL Fund, allowing for donations to support its student internship program that focuses on offering students experiences in careers such as STEM, marketing and production. MNVL also announced Undeniably Dairy as an official sponsor of MNVL, with a core focus on promoting the health benefits of dairy amongst Gen Z audience.
Since launching in 2019, MNVL has grown year over year, with over 82 Minnesota high schools participating and over 2,000 members as of Fall 2023 season.
“Minnesota Varsity League’s introduction of a middle school league marks a significant advancement in establishing Minnesota as a leading hub for scholastic esports,” said Jacqueline Lamm, STEM/Esports TOSA, MSP District. “Providing middle school students with equal opportunities to engage and learn in games they are growing to appreciate is truly remarkable. I am eagerly anticipating the innovation and progress of MNVL, both in its present state and in the future.”
MNVL Jr. will follow a format similar to its high school program predecessor, focusing on fifth through eighth-grade students competing in these titles: Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers, Chess, and Minecraft. Minnesota middle schools interested in onboarding for the Spring 2024 season can do so until the end of January 2024.

Minnesota Varsity League (MNVL) is Wisdom Gaming’s scholastic esports organization and the home for Minnesota high school esports. Founded in 2019, the organization provides students with opportunities to grow as students and competitors through varsity level competition, professional guidance and community building.
Students participating in MNVL gain real-life experience outside of the games they play through opportunities to learn from esports professionals, including players, casters, and others in the industry.
